Abstract:
Most organizational interventions fail not because they are technically incorrect, but because they operate at the wrong level. Processes are changed, tools are implemented, people are replaced. And the system returns, time and again, to the same state.

This article explores the distinction between first-order changes and second-order changes. Through Watzlawick, Weakland, and Fisch's theory of change, Donella Meadows' leverage points, and Carlos Guillermo Gallardo Heredia's AMSI and SISP™ frameworks, a shift of question is proposed: instead of "how do we do better what we do?", ask "what would we have to stop doing for the problem to resolve itself?". An explicit comparison between the linear consultant and the complexity consultant is included.

Keywords: second-order change, rules of the game, leverage points, complex systems, SMEs, AMSI, SISP™, systemic consulting.
